Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to compare two qualitative approaches that are popular in social research, namely narrative and ethnographic approaches, and explore the advantages, limitations, and applications of each method. The method used in this study is a literature study, in which the researcher examines the relevant literature and relevant sources to understand the characteristics, data collection techniques, and analysis applied in both approaches. The results show that the narrative approach focuses more on individual stories and subjective experiences, while ethnography focuses on the observation and understanding of culture and social practices in the context of groups. The advantage of a narrative approach lies in its ability to unearth the deep meaning of individual experiences, while ethnography provides a broader understanding of social and cultural contexts. The implications of this study are the importance of researchers choosing appropriate methods based on the research objectives and the context being studied, as well as the potential for the development of both approaches in the future to address complex challenges in social and cultural studies.
